Question: Years ago a Lowe’s was supposed to go on an empty lot on Independence Boulevard, but that never happened. What is going to go there now?

Answer: It’s still up in the air what will happen to the Haygood Square Marketplace (formerly the Giant Square Shopping Center) near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Witchduck Road.

But a more clear plan for the 13.5 acre site should emerge soon, said real estate broker Troy Parker.

“We’re negotiating with two grocery anchors,” Parker said. He’s not able to reveal which stores are eyeing the site, but they are national chains.

After an anchor store is decided, other tenants can be determined, Parker said.

According to a sign advertising space in the center, there’s space for a 10,000 to 50,000-square-foot anchor store and several 1,000-10,000-square-foot shops.

The shopping center was once anchored by a Farm Fresh. The grocery store closed about a year before Lowe’s bought the site in 2007. The Farm Fresh was demolished to make way for a new home improvement store.

But expansion plans changed during the recession, and Lowe’s decided to sell the land in 2013. Local developer Michael Sifen bought the site for $9 million in 2014.
